how to get 10k followers on twitter?

i had written this thread on 24 aug 2025 on twitter to help my oomfs crack the code of twitter and many of them did. all the principles i talked about in this thread are still applicable and will always be. so go for it!

so far, i've got around 13 offers (the ones i joined + the ones i didn't).

11 of them came from my connections and online presence.

sharing everything i learnt about building a vibrant online presence that kept me employed.

start from the basics:

building an online presence isn't "optional". if you still have the notion, change it. you will know why in the thread ahead.

also, before i tell you how to start, i wanna share some common positive/negative notions.

1. number of followers != genuine connections.

there are lots of folks who have 10k, 20k followers and still struggle with getting referrals and reaching out.

and it's because they have focused on the wrong parameters while building the audience. hence no benefits from it.

2. posting more won't speed up audience building.

since the start, i've focused only on sharing the stuff that i built and sharing my own experiences and these things have limits.

if i start posting other things for the sake of posting more, i will lose my genuineness and again, i'm at square 1.

3. you are always ready.

the most common problem my friends tell me while building an online presence is "what to post?" "i'm not ready?".

that's the catch, you have to start before you are ready.

i started when i didn't even have a single internship in my portfolio and later it compounded really well.

(i'll share what to post when you don't have any experience in the thread ahead)

4. i don't want to sound cringe.

many people take honour in saying "haha, i don't shitpost like you" while being unemployed.

the fact of the market is "if you don't get attention, you don't get anything".

better to be a shitposter making money than a proud unemployed who has empty pockets.

now, how to build the audience?

1. do the basics first, have an account (with unique dp - it matters) and a good bio.

if you don't have any idea of these, copy the ones (not word for word) from who you think have a vibrant audience.

2. what to post?

  • your lil wins (prs merged, appreciation from maintainers, streaks, etc)
  • your learnings (get a good image for thumbnail and write a catchy blog on that)
  • your observations (we all observe lots of good things while studying, working, share those, for many it's a new insight)

  • a lil bit of your personal life

(that's subjective.

i didn't use to do it before but as a socially expressive person, i love to share events of my life and it brings joy.

also i got many real friends and connections from this as our background/hometown/memories/ideology match.

i love it. it's your choice if you wanna do it or not)

once you posted for 30 days, you will start getting many ideas to post stuff

and from there you'll never need to search what to post.

3. DOs while building the audience

  • help other builders by commenting or reposting their content.
  • while commenting/dming people, ask SPECIFIC questions.
  • never do "how can i get a 15 lpa job" bullshit.

ask like "my goal is seed and series A startups so how can i target them

and what they ask in the interviews, assignment? trial period? projects? or what"

be as specific as you can and see yourself getting replies from really successful people.

i got it from lovable ceo, a usa-based investor, mannu paji, archie, just to name a few.

4. DON'Ts while building the audience.

1. never rage bait for couple of dollars.

when (successful) ppl see you doing that. they lose interest and tag you as a shitposter.

2. Know your limits. don't involve in hate, controversies and offending others.

even though you get some followers, you've made a loss for the long term.

3. Dont dm "hi" "hello" "pls help" to the people you take inspiration from.

attention is most important thing in this market.

attention from a successful figure can change ur life overnight.

imagine you sent "hi" to a ceo of a company you wanna get in.

she opens up your dm and sees that cringe af "hi".

that's it. you lost an opportunity to change your life.

and most successful ppl are too busy to give you a second chance.

so consider their 3 seconds of attention as the life changing opportunity and make it count.

be specific and show the impact.

i never send more than 4 small lines. also, i have already written the most common ones so that I don't dig a well when i am thirsty.

those 4 lines make them curious enough to talk further and that's the goal.

(i ll share those later sometimes)

4. don't post out of niche things especially when you are new.

i think when we start we should keep our online presence in just one direction

so that similar people can connect with you fast.

don't share how good of a rajma you make if you are attracting the folks who are good at distributed systems

(again, it's subjective)

i do post many unrelated things these days but i never did when i was building a decent enough audience.

5. don't lose your original self.

making mistakes is okay. be original. don't fake anything for some numbers.

you'll love building an audience when you are genuine and will meet genuine people.

that's all. experiment and learn.

i'm not a big fan of writing long ass text but felt like doing it so here it is.

if you have any questions, try to find the answers by yourself. if you can't, comment
